A cryptocurrency is a shared ledger that thousands of computers keep in sync. "Mining" is how new entries (blocks) get added and how the network agrees on one history. Whoever adds a block is paid in new coins and fees. That reward is what people mean by mining income.
Miners race to find a number (a nonce) that makes the block's hash start with enough zeros. The only way is to guess billions of times a second. The winner adds the block and gets the reward. The animation above shows the idea: random hashes, and a gold one when it happens to start with zeros.
No guessing race. You lock up ("stake") coins as a deposit, and the network picks validators, weighted by stake, to add blocks. Cheating loses your deposit. It uses a tiny fraction of the energy of Proof of Work. Ethereum switched to it in 2022, so there's no more Ethereum mining.
A single miner might wait years to win a block. Pools combine thousands of miners' power and share each reward in proportion to the work done, so income is small but steady. Most mining today goes through pools (F2Pool, ViaBTC, Braiins).
Mining alone and keeping the whole reward if you win. It's like a lottery ticket: huge payout, tiny chance. It only makes sense with a lot of hashing power.
You rent mining power from a company instead of owning hardware. Some are legitimate (e.g. renting hashpower on NiceHash), but this is where most crypto scams live: "guaranteed returns" and Ponzi-style payouts. If it promises fixed daily profit, walk away.
Mining two coins that share the same algorithm with the same work, for example Litecoin and Dogecoin. You get both rewards for one effort.
CPU: any computer; only competitive on CPU-friendly coins like Monero. GPU: graphics cards; good for many smaller coins. ASIC: machines built for one algorithm; the only way to mine Bitcoin profitably.
The network adjusts difficulty so blocks keep a steady pace however many miners join. Bitcoin also halves its block reward about every four years, so the same work earns less and less new coin.
Mining turns electricity into heat and hashes. Profit = rewards โ electricity โ hardware wear. At UK/EU home electricity prices, most home mining loses money. Always check a calculator like WhatToMine first.
PopCOIN doesn't burn your electricity. While the miner is on, PopCOIN builds up at a fixed rate and your wallet claims it. The server checks the time between claims, so nobody can mine faster by cheating. Future: bonuses for playing, translating and creating on RUDVENTUR.
